@tamaras you have to go a step beyond just copying what the competition is doing. Replicating their efforts is not a competitive advantage. Yes, research your competitors' link profiles, and deduce what types of links they have. Then take that another step.

Basically, you check out the links of your top competitors and then try to build the same links.Knowing who your competitors are and what kind of time and monetary investment they are making into their online marketing.

Blah! As far as I'm concerned most of the "SEO best practices" in this discussion have nothing at all to do with what should be considered SEO. That a website functions as a website in its in its intended medium (teh internet) and is accessible to its intended audience (visitors and SE crawlers alike) should be a prerequisite for SEO work, taken care of by whoever built your website. SEO's shouldn't be following "SEO best practices" -- developers, designers, and content producers should!

Maybe we could just rename "SEO Best Practices" something that will allow me to do my job without spending all my time fighting tooth and nail with developers for the most basic functionality. I propose we call it: Search Agent Compatibility. Then, instead of an "under construction" banner, your site can be Now Undergoing Transition to Search Agent Compatibility.

kthx,

Interesting points covered. It seems the SEO push is so great lately, that eventually it won't matter as an advantage.
